General Overview

Nirit Takele's work is a striking testament to the intersection of heritage, migration, and contemporary identity. Born in Ethiopia in 1985 and immigrating to Israel during the historic Operation Solomon in 1991, Takele's artistic journey is deeply rooted in the complex narratives of displacement, adaptation, and self-discovery. Her vivid and full-of-energy paintings reflect personal memory and collective cultural consciousness, capturing the nuances of the Beta Israel community within the broader Israeli and global artistic landscapes.

A 2015 graduate of Shenkar College's Multidisciplinary Art Department, Takele developed a unique artistic language that fuses elements of classical European techniques with the bold, graphic sensibilities of modernist abstraction.  Inspired by painters like Michelangelo, Diego Rivera, and David Hockney, she carves out her distinct visual style that reveals exaggerated human forms, a dynamic sense of movement, and a palette that pulsates life. The figures in her paintings emerge in striking sculptural compositions, defined by broad, flat planes of color and intricate tonal juxtapositions, which lend them both weight & dreamlike lightness.

Her artistic practice is not merely an aesthetic endeavor but a powerful act of storytelling. Each painting is a bridge between past & present, between cultures and geographies, and between personal memory and collective identity.

Israeli authorities on Thursday morning confirmed that the remains recovered from the Gaza Strip the previous evening belong to murdered Thai national, Sudthisak Rinthalak, whose body had been held captive in Gaza since the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre. He is survived by his brother Thaphon, his father, Thongma, and mother, On.

ART BASEL UPDATE
STARS in the ARTS, an exhibition of Jewish & Israeli artists, was canceled last minute by the SATELLITE Art Show largely because it featured Israeli creatives, despite the  exhibition’s focus on healing, grief, and resilience rather than politics. The full exhibition and survivor program was moved and urgently needs community support.

Aharon Cohen, 71 | Kiryat Arba — was stabbed to death in a terror attack perpetrated by two Palestinian who accelerated their vehicle into people at the Gush Etzion Junction in the West Bank. He is survived by six children and grandchildren. 

Cpl. Ermias Bahata, 18 | Maaleh Adumim — Ermias collapsed earlier this week at the Logistics Corps training base in southern Israel and was pronounced dead shortly afterward. The IDF says an allergic reaction is suspected, though the exact cause has yet to be formally determined.

HOSTAGES' BODIES RETURNED

​​​​​​​Col. Asaf Hamami
Hamami served as the commander of the Southern Brigade in the Gaza Division. He was killed  defending Kibbutz Nirim during the Hamas-led attack of Oct. 7, 2023 and his body taken to the Gaza Strip. He was 40 years old at the time of his death. He leaves behind parents, a brother, his wife, and three children,” the IDF said.

Capt. Omer Maxim Neutra
Neutra was born and raised in the United States and immigrated to Israel as a lone soldier through the “Garin Tzabar” program. He served as a tank platoon commander in Battalion 77, Sa’ar Golan Division and was killed defending communities in southern Israel near the Gaza border on Oct. 7 and his body abducted by the Hamas terrorist organization.He was 21 years old at the time of his death. He leaves behind his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Sgt. Oz Daniel
Daniel served in the same battalion as Neutra, and also fell in battle in southern Israel on Oct. 7 He was 19 at the time of his death, which was officially determined on Feb. 25, 2024. He leaves behind his parents and twin sister.

Yona Efraim Feldbaum, 37 | Zayit Ra’anan 
Yona was killed by Hamas in southern Gaza on Tuesday, in a breach of the U.S.-brokered truce with the Palestinian terror group. He served as a combat engineering reservist in the IDF’s Gaza Division.

This brings the total number of Israeli soldiers killed across all fronts since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, massacre has risen to 921.
